Your Rights as a Voter with Limited English Proficiency
If you speak English less than “very well,” know that you have the right to receive assistance while voting.
Under federal law, voters who have difficulty reading or understanding English can receive in-person assistance at the polls from a person of their choice. Here’s how to make sure you can vote confidently:
What You Can Do:
-
Bring a family member, friend, or someone you trust to assist you at the polls. This person cannot be your employer, an agent of your employer, or an agent or officer of your union.
-
If you live in a county that provides bilingual voting assistance in a language you speak, you can request help from a bilingual poll worker and ask for materials, like your ballot, in that language.
